Revit is brilliant at modelling and terrible at repetition. Add-ins (also called plugins, apps or extensions) fill that gap. This guide groups them by the task you are actually trying to finish, says which ones are free, and is honest about where Parapet's own apps fit.
What is a Revit add-in?
A Revit add-in is a compiled extension (a .NET DLL plus a .addin manifest in %AppData%\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\<year>) that Revit loads at start-up and exposes as ribbon buttons. Unlike Dynamo graphs or macros, add-ins run as native code, have proper UI, and can be licensed and updated like any other software. Revit LT cannot load add-ins; full Revit 2020-2027 can.
Revit's Properties palette edits one selection at a time and schedules only show what you scheduled. For "set the Fire Rating on all 340 doors on level 3" you want a grid.
Parapet Hub (Pro, 30-day trial) - category → family → type picker, a parameter grid with only the columns you choose, type or paste from Excel, "set all targets", unit-aware, validated, one Revit undo per commit. Also carries 108 one-click actions (see below). Revit 2020-2027.
Schedules + Excel round-trip - free and built in, but clumsy: you need a schedule per category and there is no validation when you paste values back.
Dynamo / pyRevit scripts - free and infinitely flexible; you maintain the scripts and train the team.
The classic BIM problem: the room programme lives in the client's spreadsheet, the door hardware list lives with a consultant, and someone retypes both into Revit.
Parapet Link (Pro, 30-day trial) - Excel, CSV and Google Sheets; preview the source, pick a key column (Element ID, Mark, Number…), map columns to parameters with fuzzy matching, validate every cell, push in one transaction, export and round-trip. $12/month or $99/year.
Ideate BIMLink - the long-standing Excel link for Revit, priced for firms; very capable, Excel-only.
DiRoots SheetLink - free Excel/Google Sheets import-export; good for simple exports, less validation.
3. Cleaning up imported CAD (DWG) and heavy models
Imported DWGs - especially ones nested inside families - are the most common reason a Revit model is slow. Revit's own Manage Links and Purge Unused do not show where an import is used.
Parapet Audit (free forever) - lists every imported and linked CAD instance and symbol, the views that show it, duplicates and files on the wrong workset; select, isolate or delete with confirmation and undo.
Autodesk Model Checker - free, broad health checks against a configurable standard; reporting rather than fixing.
pyRevit - free, includes several purge and "find imports" tools.
Parapet Hub - create sheets from views, renumber and rename sheets, align viewports, apply or remove view templates, duplicate views, delete unplaced views and empty sheets, add/remove revisions, tag untagged elements.
DiRoots ProSheets - free batch printing/export to PDF and DWG.
5. Rooms, doors, walls and floors
Parapet Hub's action library covers the things architects do 400 times by hand: renumber rooms by position or level, write room name/number into hosted elements, floors from rooms, MEP spaces from rooms, delete unplaced rooms, renumber doors by room, set sill/head heights, change wall top/base constraints, join and unjoin, flip, and check duplicates at the same location. See the full action list.
6. Coordination, worksets and model health
Parapet Hub - move to workset, set phase created/demolished, find duplicates at the same location, select warning elements, model summary.
pyRevit is the best free, community-maintained toolbox for Revit, and Dynamo ships with Revit. Both are worth installing. Their trade-off is that the results depend on scripts your office maintains; Parapet's apps are productised, supported and validated - that is what you pay for.

What the right add-in changes: the same four jobs, by hand and with Parapet.
Installing Revit add-ins safely
Close Revit; run the installer as your own user (Parapet installs per user, no admin rights).
On first launch Revit may show Security - Unsigned Add-In - choose Always Load for publishers you trust, and verify the installer's SHA-256 on the docs page.
Keep one installer per tool family; Parapet puts Hub, Link and Audit in a single Parapet ribbon tab.
Try the Parapet apps
One installer for Revit 2020-2027. Audit is free; Hub and Link come with 30-day trials, no card.
